  1. Because you're going through your company. They pay a lot of money to insurance companies to get huge group rates for their employees regardless of their medical history. The same is not true for privately-obtained health insurance, which is what John is addressing here, and what the ACA is trying to help with.

  10. Hospitals accept different payments from different payers. You will see the same act in common areas like hotels, utilities, universities, etc. Vendors for example will adjust their prices if you have a lot of cash or lower their prices if you don't have a whole lot. Hospitals can still get patients under medicare, but at a different price than those under a more expensive insurance. Altogether, hospitals look at the most profitable means that your insurance/medicare will allow.

  11. Man, if only buying more servers would solve the problems with the website. From the sounds of it, the software engineers who made it did a terrible job testing/debugging it.

If the USA really wanted to save money it would cut it's military budget which is easily a lot more than all the other nations in the world combined. This universal health care is a drop in a bucket compared to the military budget. But I guess the US debt and getting rid of health care is the price for the military industrial complex needed to play world police.

  16. They want to know your health background so they can refuse you health insurance if you have any hint of costing them money and if you lie or accidentally misinform them, they can revoke coverage. The government is going to cover people just like a regular insurance plan but with less focus on making money for shareholders. And it's cheaper than the current system, because the ER has to treat everyone, no matter if they can pay, and it's passed on.

  18. Maybe ability to purchase more server space or IT staff, but the program is funded separately and isn't effected by the shutdown, which is why John can still enroll.

When did your teacher try to access the site? From library of congress site: "The Library has restored access to all sites in addition to our legislative information sites. Other legislative branch agencies, and many executive branch agencies with information functions similar to the Library, are granting public access as well."

  19. You have to talk to the GOP on that one. They seem to think that fetuses have a lot of rights.

This nation is my home and I'd like to think I would be taken care of if I fell on hard times. What if I were to eat poorly and drink in my 20s then get responsible at 30 then get diabetes or have liver failure at 50. Would I deserve health insurance or an "I told you so?"

Drug/alcohol problems requires specific care. Enabling treating the effects of a disease is not treating the disease.

  24. No, insurance and medicare have more influence than the hospitals on pricing. Because if hospitals don't like what their offered, they won't be covered by insurance/medicare, so they won't get those patients.
